Wike Issues Directive to His Allies as Fubara Determines APC By-election Delegates
The Rivers state February 21st house of assembly by-election appears to be generating so much buzz– widely seen as the first political battle between governor Siminalayi Fubara and former governor Nyesom Wike.
According to a political ally of governor Sim Fubara who spoke to Reliant.ng on condition of anonymity, FCT minister, Nyesom Wike has ordered his supporters to switch to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after governor Sim Fubara allegedly determined the All Progressive Congress (APC) delegates for the Ahoada East constituency II and Khana Constituency II by-election. The source claims that Nyesom Wike feels disappointed by the development which convinces him that the Rivers state APC structure have been handed to governor Sim Fubara at his expense– the reason he ordered his supporters to switch to the SDP and contest in the by-election against the APC candidates who emerge the party’s candidates through Fubara’s influence.
“He claims to be the political leader in Rivers state why is he telling his supporters to contest on the platform of the SDP. Yesterday, the APC has concluded peaceful ward delegate congresses in Ahoada East and Khana LGAs, Rivers State, ahead of the Feb 21, 2026 Assembly bye-elections. Five delegates emerged per ward under INEC and security monitoring to vote in the party primaries. These delegates will in coming days, elect the party’s candidates for the by-election. I must tell you that Fubara is in charge, anybody who tells you otherwise is a liar”, the source stated.
While this remains speculation, reports suggest that Nyesom Wike is dissatisfied with president Tinubu over the way the Rivers state crisis is being handled especially as it appears the president is taking side with governor Fubara since his defection to the APC.
The former governor of Rivers is also said to be considering forming political alliance with the SDP as he considers sponsoring his governorship candidate on their platform especially as it appears the APC’s 2027 governorship candidate has already been determined.
