A top Rivers state government official has provided insight into why four members of the Rivers state House of Assembly who had publicly called for the impeachment proceeding against governor Siminalayi Fubara to be halted, suddenly changed their mind, insisting a few days after that the governor must be impeached.
The four Rivers State lawmakers: Sylvanus Nwankwo, the house minority leader who represents Omuma state constituency; Peter Abbey of Degema state constituency; Barile Nwakoh, the deputy minority leader representing Khana constituency I, and Emilia Amadi, who represents Obio/Akpor constituency II had appealed to their colleagues to consider a political solution to the lingering crisis between governor Sim Fubara and the members of the state house of assembly.
The lawmakers would later retract their earlier appeal, reaffirming their support for governor Siminalayi Fubara’s impeachment, alleging that the governor is obstinate and unwilling to yield to peace. They accused the governor of urging his political allies and followers to attack them on social media.
However, according to a report by the Punch Newspaper, a top government official in Rivers state has disclosed that the four lawmakers had reached an agreement with governor Sim Fubara, stating that they are being coerced by their political godfather in Rivers state to support Fubara impeachment. According to the source, the four lawmakers told the governor that they are willing to align with him if he will guarantee their political future in his government.
The source claims that the four lawmakers would later reverse their stance, reaffirming support for the governor’s removal because the governor failed to give them assurances over their political future.
He stated that the lawmakers demanded that the governor assured them that they will get their reelection ticket if they align with him at the expense of Martin Amaewhule’s camp as the lawmakers are certain that governor Sim Fubara will come on top of the ongoing political crisis in the state and that he has been guaranteed automatic ticket by the All Progressive Congress (APC) national leadership for 2027 governorship election in Rivers state.
