What Tinubu Told US About Gov. Yusuf Abba Kabir’s Defection To APC–DSP Barau Reveals

The deputy president of the Nigeria’s senate, Barau I. Jibrin has disclosed that president Bola Ahmed Tinubu before governor Yusuf Abba Kabir’s defection to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) directed the members and leadership of the party in Kano state to give the governor maximum cooperation.

DSP Barau made the disclosure while speaking to journalists in Kano on Tuesday, a day after governor Yusuf Abba Kabir was officially received into the APC.

Describing president Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a renowned political leader, he said president Bola Ahmed Tinubu warned the stakeholders of the party in Kano state not to distract the governor from delivering good governance to the people of Kano state through conflicting interests and ambitions of the party members.

He explained that cooperating with the governor includes those nursing governorship ambition forgoing it for the reelection of Abba Kabir in 2027. He reiterated that he has dropped his 2027 governorship ambition in the interest of the party and will offer his support to the governor necessary for the people of Kano state to enjoy dividends of the governor’s leadership.

DSP Barau revealed that in his determination to support the governor, he has rebranded his support group: Tinubu/Barau Organisation to Tinubu, Abba, Barau Organisation.

“That is why we said issues of aspirations and contests should be dropped. I have dropped mine. If truly we are for the people, then we must support him,” he said.

“It is a day I will sleep happily because our party has gained a governor. For over a year, we have been receiving decampees from different parties, including the NNPP. Now, by God’s mercy, we have received a sitting governor of a state like Kano.

“What is important now is to support him and also advise him, including with prayers. The situation in Kano demands that we come together in a democratic way to help him succeed,” he said.

DSP Barau thereafter emphasized that all rivalry between his camp and that of governor Yusuf Abba Kabir has been shelved for the unity of the party in Kano state, recounting his previous sacrifices for the party.

He also stated governor Yusuf Abba Kabir will not be pressured by the members of the APC in Kano state in his deciding how he runs the state in terms of nominations for appointments. According to him, he will not demand commissioner slots from the governor but will not decline to nominate individuals if such offers are given to him.
