We Resisted, Villagers Kill 20 Bandits in Fierce Gun Battle, But Four Residents Lose Their Lives

Residents of Kafin-Duguri village in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State have narrated how they fought back against heavily armed bandits in a fierce confrontation that reportedly left more than 20 attackers dead.
Despite the villagers’ bravery, the community paid a painful price as four residents lost their lives and several others sustained injuries during the violent raid.
According to a resident, Malam Muhammad Sani, the attack occurred on the night of February 20 when a large group of bandits stormed the village from the notorious Dajin Mada Forest, an area long associated with criminal gangs operating across parts of northern Nigeria.
Sani explained that the attackers began shooting as they invaded the community, causing panic among residents. However, instead of fleeing, local vigilantes and traditional hunters quickly mobilized to defend the village and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.
During the confrontation, villagers reportedly succeeded in killing more than 20 bandits, forcing the remaining attackers to retreat back toward the forest.
Despite the successful resistance, the village suffered significant losses. Four residents were killed during the attack, while seven others sustained injuries.
Among those injured were Sani’s brother and his pregnant sister-in-law, who was reportedly shot in the stomach during the clash.
The attackers also rustled 57 cows and stole three motorcycles before fleeing the community.
Following the incident, residents say fear still grips the village as they worry about possible retaliatory attacks. To strengthen security, villagers have begun organizing nightly patrols, with local vigilantes and hunters guarding the community.
Women and children have reportedly been moved to safer locations in nearby communities while the men remain behind to protect their homes.
In response to the tragedy, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed provided financial assistance to victims of the attack. The governor reportedly donated ₦1.5 million to each family that lost a loved one and ₦500,000 to each injured victim to support their treatment and recovery.
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by rural communities in northern Nigeria, where residents often rely on local vigilantes and hunters to defend themselves against armed groups.
