VP Shettima Returns from COP30, Highlights Nigeria’s Climate Leadership
Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after leading Nigeria’s delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil.
During the summit, Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to a green transition and global climate leadership, calling for sustainable finance and nature protection.
His speech, titled “The Rational Soul of Nature,” urged world leaders to recognise the economic value of nature and provide predictable, equitable, and accessible funding for its preservation.
At the Leaders’ Climate Summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, VP Shettima joined global leaders, development partners, and business executives to discuss actionable strategies for combating climate change.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s renewed climate agenda is “not just an aspiration, but a solemn national commitment to preserve the planet for future generations.”
On the sidelines, Shettima held bilateral meetings on carbon market cooperation, aiming to unlock $2.5 to $3 billion annually in carbon finance over the next decade. This funding is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon economy and support sustainable development initiatives across the country.
The VP’s participation in COP30 has been hailed as a strong signal of Nigeria’s active role in global climate diplomacy and its determination to secure both environmental and economic benefits from green initiatives.
