Vatican Issues Tough Warning on Polyamory
The Vatican has released a powerful new doctrinal document strongly warning against the growing acceptance of polyamory across the world. The 40-page note, titled “One Flesh – In Praise of Monogamy,” was signed by Pope Leo XIV and reaffirms the Catholic Church’s long-standing teaching that marriage is a lifelong, stable, and exclusive union between one man and one woman.
According to the Vatican, the statement was released in response to the rising popularity of various non-monogamous arrangements in Western countries. The document addresses both polyamory—where individuals maintain multiple consensual romantic relationships—and polygamy, a subject Catholic bishops in Africa have discussed for years as a major pastoral challenge.
The document warns that non-exclusive relationships are built on false promises. It states that “polygamy, adultery, or polyamory are based on the illusion that the intensity of a relationship can be found in a succession of faces.” It also highlights global concerns such as rising divorce rates, fragile unions, and the normalization of adultery.
Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, head of the Vatican’s doctrine office, explained that the note aims to defend “a unique and exclusive union of love”—one in which both partners fully belong to each other. Interestingly, the document also expands on the Catholic view of marital intimacy, emphasizing that the unitive aspect of sex—emotional closeness and shared love—is just as important as the procreative aspect.
The Vatican stresses that while the church still prohibits artificial contraception, marital intimacy is not only about having children but also about strengthening the sacred bond between spouses.
