US Embassy Warns of Possible Terror Threat to American Facilities, Schools in Nigeria

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and US-affiliated schools in the country.

In a notice published on Monday, the embassy said the advisory was issued to inform American citizens of potential risks and encourage them to take extra precautions.

The mission specifically urged US nationals to exercise heightened vigilance when visiting diplomatic missions and institutions connected with the United States.

According to the advisory, the warning covers the embassy complex in Abuja and the United States Consulate General Lagos in Lagos, as well as schools affiliated with the United States.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the statement said.

Embassy Urges Heightened Security Measures

The embassy advised American citizens to adopt precautionary security measures, including varying travel times and routes when visiting these facilities.

Further safety guidance urged individuals to avoid predictable routines and remain alert while moving around public places.

It also recommended that people keep their mobile phones fully charged in case of emergencies and familiarise themselves with available exit points when entering buildings.

Other measures highlighted include maintaining a low profile, avoiding large gatherings or demonstrations, and reviewing personal security plans regularly.

Source of Threat Not Disclosed

While issuing the warning, the embassy did not disclose the specific source of the potential threat.

The advisory comes amid heightened global security concerns following recent military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Those attacks reportedly triggered retaliatory missile and drone operations by Iran against countries considered allies of Washington in the region.

Alert Comes Amid Protests in Nigeria

The warning also coincides with protests in parts of Nigeria, particularly in Lagos and some northern states, organised by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria.

The demonstrations were staged to condemn the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, during the strikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel.
