Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has lauded Massad Boulos, a senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, for debunking claims that Christians are being deliberately targeted by terrorists in Nigeria.
Boulos, who previously served as Trump’s Senior Adviser on Arab and African Affairs, addressed the issue in a recent video shared by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Friday.
Responding to remarks by some U.S. politicians alleging Christian persecution in Nigeria, Boulos described such claims as “unfortunate and misleading.” He stressed that terrorism in Nigeria is not based on religion but on broader insecurity that affects citizens of all faiths, adding that Boko Haram and ISIS have killed more Muslims than Christians.
“Any loss of life is deeply tragic. Those familiar with Nigeria know that terrorism has no religion, colour, or tribe. People of all backgrounds have suffered from these attacks,” Boulos said.
Addressing the recurring farmer-herder clashes in the Middle Belt, he clarified that these conflicts are driven by socio-economic factors, not religion.
Boulos also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for intensifying security efforts in troubled areas, noting that recent strategies are already yielding results. He praised Nigeria’s enduring religious coexistence, describing its diversity as a “source of unity, not division.”
“Nigeria has always been a country where different religious and ethnic groups coexist peacefully. With nearly equal numbers of Christians and Muslims, religion has never been a dividing line — and it shouldn’t become one now,” he added.
Reacting to Boulos’ comments, Bashir Ahmad took to his (formerly Twitter) page to commend the U.S. diplomat’s clarity, saying the remarks help correct a dangerous global narrative.
“It’s good to see senior U.S. officials pushing back against the false ‘Christian genocide’ narrative. I hope this clearer framing encourages stronger, coordinated action by our troops against terrorists and other criminal elements,” Ahmad wrote.
