The United States president, Donald Trump, has warned that South Africa will face immediate consequences after accusing the country of serious human rights abuses and misconduct at the recent G20 summit.

He justified the U.S. absence at the summit by accusing the South African government of failing to address alleged abuses.
He wrote, “The United States did not attend the G20 in South Africa, because the South African Government refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Right Abuses endured by Afrikaners, and other descendants of Dutch, French, and German settlers.”
He then highlighted what he described as threats to life and property, claiming these violations went unpunished. Trump added
“To put it more bluntly, they are killing white people, and randomly allowing their farms to be taken from them.”
He also criticised U.S. media outlets for failing to report on the situation.
Trump said, “Perhaps, worst of all, the soon to be out of business New York Times and the Fake News Media won’t issue a word against this genocide. That’s why all the Liars and Pretenders of the Radical Left Media are going out of business!”
Trump further alleged that South Africa disrespected U.S. officials at the summit by refusing proper protocol.
According to him, “At the conclusion of the G20, South Africa refused to hand off the G20 Presidency to a Senior Representative from our U.S. Embassy, who attended the Closing Ceremony.”
He then confirmed that South Africa would be excluded from the next summit, stating
“Therefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year.”
Trump also announced that U.S. financial support would be halted. He wrote
“South Africa has demonstrated to the World they are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere, and we are going to stop all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.”
He concluded the statement with “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The 2025 G20 Johannesburg Summit was held from 22 to 23 November 2025 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre (NASREC), marking the first time the G20 summit was hosted on African soil.
The summit brought together leaders of the world’s 20 largest economies to discuss issues including global economic growth, climate action, debt sustainability, and development priorities for the Global South.
Under South Africa’s presidency, the summit operated under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability”, emphasising multilateral cooperation and the priorities of developing nations.
The summit concluded with a leaders’ declaration highlighting commitments to sustainable economic growth, climate resilience, and global development, despite the absence of the United States delegation.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, who chaired the summit, formally closed the proceedings and handed over the G20 presidency, rejecting claims that protocol was disrupted, and describing the summit as a success for multilateral engagement.
South Africa called the U.S. boycott “regrettable” but stressed that the summit’s outcomes demonstrated the ability of the G20 to continue addressing global challenges even with one member absent.
