Troops Arrest Suspected Gunrunners, Recover 444 Rounds of Ammunition

Troops of the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have arrested two suspected gunrunners and recovered a large cache of ammunition during a routine security operation in Taraba State.
The arrest, which took place on March 19, 2026, was carried out by troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Wukari, along the Wukari–Ikyaior Road in Wukari Local Government Area. The suspects, identified as Wisdom Soomga, 32, from Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, and Elisha Danladi, 38, a native of Wukari in Taraba State, were intercepted while riding a motorcycle.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of 444 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. Other items found in their possession included ₦29,200 in cash, two mobile phones, ATM cards, charms, personal belongings, and the motorcycle used for transportation.
The suspects and the recovered items are currently in military custody as investigations continue to determine the origin and intended use of the ammunition.
The Commander of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, commended the troops for their vigilance and swift response in line with the directive of the Chief of Army Staff to clamp down on criminal activities and enhance security in the region.
He urged the personnel to sustain the tempo of operations and remain committed to flushing out criminal elements from Taraba State. The commander also reassured residents of the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, while calling on the public to provide timely and credible information to security agencies.
Akaliro further emphasized the importance of discipline and professionalism within the ranks, noting that officers and soldiers who distinguish themselves in the line of duty would be appropriately recognized and rewarded.
“We commend the troops for their vigilance and prompt response. They must remain resolute in sustaining ongoing efforts to rid Taraba State of criminal elements. The Nigerian Army remains fully committed to safeguarding lives and property, and we urge the public to support us with credible information,” Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro stated.
