According to him, the ruling APC has been actively working to destabilise opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party to eliminate credible alternatives to its government.
Former Sokoto State Governor and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has accused President Bola Tinubu and other chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of masterminding the crisis rocking opposition parties across the country in a bid to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
Tambuwal made the allegation while speaking as a guest on a Channels Television programme monitored by SaharaReporters on Friday.
According to him, the ruling APC has been actively working to destabilise opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party to eliminate credible alternatives to its government.
“We live in this country. We’re all sensible. When you look at what’s happening in various political parties in Nigeria today, you don’t need to be told, no matter the amount of denial by whoever, including President Bola Tinubu, that they are not involved in the destabilisation efforts of opposition parties,” Tambuwal said.
He added: “It’s not correct (that APC is not responsible for the crisis in the opposition parties). I am not accusing them. I am saying that they are involved in efforts aimed at destabilising opposition parties.
“I am saying that they are involved in destabilisation efforts. You have heard me loud and clear, I said I am saying. I’m not suspecting. It’s clear. The signs are very clear. And they are very obvious.”
Tambuwal warned that the agenda of the APC is dangerous for Nigeria’s democracy.
“The signs are very clear that the people in charge of our government today in Nigeria are interested in a one-party state. Well, it may not work. It’s not in the interest of democracy. It’s not in the interest of Nigeria. But that is the path they are pursuing,” he said.
In a related development, SaharaReporters earlier on Friday reported how Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos State, accused the APC of weaponising state institutions against opposition parties in the state.
In a statement on Friday, Rhodes-Vivour said the police sealed off Lion Field, Alimosho, a venue approved for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to hold a political meeting.
He described the action as an assault on democracy and an apparent attempt to silence opposition voices.
“It is truly disappointing that the Lagos APC is abusing state institutions by sealing off the venue where the ADC was scheduled to hold a meeting tomorrow after obtaining the necessary approvals,” Rhodes-Vivour said.
“This is not only an abuse of power, it is a clear attempt to stifle opposition voices in Lagos. We understand that the APC is jittery about the momentum the ADC and Obidients are building across the state, but deploying state security agencies to frustrate lawful political activities is unacceptable and undemocratic.”
He stressed that Lagos does not belong to one political clique but to every citizen.
“Lagos belongs to all of us, not a select few. And it is our constitutional right to assemble lawfully. Let it be clear that no amount of intimidation or harassment will stop us from engaging with the people of Lagos. Our movement is powered by the people, and no barricade or show of force can weaken their resolve for a better Lagos,” he said.
