Three Arrested In Enugu For Stealing High-Voltage Power Cables, Hiding Loot Under Cassava Leaves
The suspects, identified as Chukwu Kelvin (25), Kenechukwu Ude (25), and Uche Nwankwo (28), were arrested by operatives of the Distress Response Squad (DRS) during a routine stop-and-search duty along the Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway on October 20, 2025.
The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended three men suspected of vandalising high-voltage power cables in Aninri Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects, identified as Chukwu Kelvin (25), Kenechukwu Ude (25), and Uche Nwankwo (28), were arrested by operatives of the Distress Response Squad (DRS) during a routine stop-and-search duty along the Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway on October 20, 2025.
Confirming the incident in a statement made available to SaharaReporters on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, revealed that the suspects were found transporting lengths of vandalised aluminium cables concealed under cassava leaves in a white minibus with registration number ENU 450 XK.
According to him, other items recovered from the suspects include a large cable cutter, two pairs of rubber gloves, and a black bag containing clothes.
He said, “Police operatives of the Enugu State Command, attached to the Distress Response Squad (DRS), on 20th October 2025, at about 4:48 a.m., intercepted and arrested three male suspects for vandalising power cables, while on routine stop-and-search duty along the Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway.
“They recovered lengths of vandalized high-voltage aluminum cables concealed with cassava crop leaves, one big cable cutter, two pairs of rubber gloves, a black bag containing clothes, and the suspects’ operational white-coloured minibus with registration number ENU 450 XK.”
He said that the suspects had confessed to vandalising cables on electric poles along Ukete Road in Oduma community and were on their way to sell them at the New Artisan Market in Enugu.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reiterated the Command’s commitment to tackling vandals and other criminals undermining essential social amenities.
“We call on citizens to continue supporting the police in our quest to ensure that essential public services are protected,” Giwa said.
The suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
