‘This is heartbreaking’: Nigerian mother shares how pastor’s deliverance left her son with cerebral palsy

A Nigerian mother has shared a deeply emotional story about how her one-year-old son developed cerebral palsy after a supposed deliverance session conducted by her husband’s pastor.

In a video now making rounds online, the woman recalled that what began as an ordinary prayer session quickly turned into a nightmare that changed her life forever.

According to her, the pastor claimed her son had a great star but was being chained by the enemy. He insisted that a deliverance must be done immediately.

“The pastor carried my child and turned him upside down,” she recounted. “That was the moment everything changed.”

Moments after the act, the child began to experience seizure episodes that later became frequent and severe. Medical examinations eventually revealed that the boy had suffered a brain injury, which doctors diagnosed as cerebral palsy.

The mother said her world fell apart from that point onward. She has since faced unimaginable emotional, physical, and financial struggles caring for her son.

“It hasn’t been easy,” she said. “He can’t walk or talk properly, and I’ve had to do everything alone.”

She also revealed that her husband, a devoted member of the same church where the incident occurred, abandoned them when their son turned two.

When asked about his whereabouts, she said she heard he had remarried and moved on with his life.

“He left us to our fate,” she said. “But I haven’t given up on my son. I’m doing my best to give him a good life.”

The heartbreaking story has drawn widespread sympathy online, with many Nigerians condemning the reckless deliverance practices in some churches and calling for stricter regulation of faith-based healing sessions involving children.

Some however, said the boy’s condition might be from birth and that the pastor’s action was just a coincidence.

Omoyemi said, ”The pastor is the enemy that saw the star and he took it and gave you trouble for replacement.”

“Nah, I don’t think it’s the turning upside down, cerebral palsy is caused by lack of oxygen in the brain, it mostly happens during/at birth, unless the pastor held the child upside down for up to 5-10 minutes. You won’t really know when a newborn has cerebral palsy until you start noticing that their growth rate is unusually slow/delayed, unable to do those things expected of their age/stage, that’s when you start noticing it. And I must say, it you saw a need to take your toddler for a deliverance, it means you already noticed something is wrong with the baby. It’s a pity. And with the way some pastors perform their almighty deliverances, they are not beating this allegation,” Slimlinda explained.

There is a 100 percent possibility that the baby had it before, he just had not been diagnosed or discovered by the parents because he was still young.
