The truth behind Tinubu sacking me”–immediate past IGP, Egbetokun
The immediate past inspector general of Nigeria Police Force, Kayode Egbetokun has countered the narrative that his being sacked by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu as IGP is due to his refusal to comply with presidential directive on state police.
Egbetokun while speaking today at his retirement thanksgiving which held at the Police Force headquarters chapel in Abuja, declared that his sack is within God’s wish and timing for his career.
He claimed that when he assumed the office of the IG in 2023, he prayed to God for three things: wisdom, grace, and God’s timing, stating that his sack was influenced by God as he has always prayed to God that he wants to finish well.
I was not expecting the appointment when it came. The first thing I did when I entered the office alone was to pray. My first prayer was for wisdom to run the office, the second for grace to end well, and the third not to stay a day longer than God permits.
I believe God has answered those prayers, and my prayer for everyone here is that God answers whatever you ask of him.”
Talking about his career, he stated his journey into the Police Force as well as his years of service, are characterized by testimonies of God’s guidance, direction, mercy, and timing.
According to him, before he joined the Nigeria’s Police Force, he had dreamt of his rising to the rank of a deputy inspector general of police (DIG).
In the dream I saw myself in a police staff car with the registration number NPF02, so I believed I would become a DIG,” he said.
He added that God sometimes shows someone only the part He wants the person to see while concealing the other part. He reiterated that his becoming the IGP is surprising to him as he had never anticipated that he would rise to becoming Nigeria’s Police chief.
He claimed that during his service days, he strove to remain professional as he was cognizant of the implication of any unprofessional conduct on the image of the police force.
I knew whatever I did would affect the image of the force. So I made it my duty to remain professional and uphold integrity, transparency and fairness.”
In his speech, the police force chaplain, Joshua Omoyele thanked Egbetokun for completing the building of the force chaplaincy during his tenure.
He appraised his faith and commitment to Christian service. He disclosed that Egbetokun is responsible for introducing Police Force annual Christmas carol.
