The Power of Choice: Elevate Your Impact as a Citizen – Banji Alabi Esq
…..Responsible Citizenship Transforms Society…….
In the annals of ancient Greek philosophy, a profound categorization of humanity emerges, dividing individuals into three distinct archetypes:
(1) Idiots,
(2)Tribesmen,
(3) and Citizens.
This timeless wisdom resonates today, urging us to reflect on our roles in shaping society.
## Who is an Idiot?
An Idiot, in the Greek context, refers to individuals detached from the fabric of community and civic responsibility , they did not use it as a curse word. Idiots are people who just don’t care. If they sit for exams, they’ll cheat. If they’re in government, they’ll steal. An idiot doesn’t care at all; if he eats bananas, he throws the peels anywhere instead of putting them in a trash bin. Idiots won’t attend monthly neighborhood meetings. They won’t pay security dues. They won’t contribute to community development. Even when they see or know about something that will harm others in the community, they won’t report it.
They prioritize instant gratification over collective progress, disregarding laws, norms, and the well-being of others. Idiots are characterized by:
– Chronic apathy toward communal duties
– Exploitative behavior for personal gain
– Disregard for environmental and social harmony
– Short-sightedness and lack of foresight
– Entitlement mentality without responsibility
– Vocal criticism without constructive contribution
Idiots aren’t defined by intellect but by a lack of regard for shared humanity
## Who is a Tribesman?
Tribesmen view the world through the lens of their group—be it ethnicity, religion, club, race, professional affiliation, or social clique : While loyalty to one’s own is natural, Tribesmen prioritize their circle over the greater good, often at a cost to others. Characteristics include:
– Favoritism toward “own people” in decisions
– Distrust of outsiders or those unlike them
– Limited perspective beyond group interests
– Potential for divisive leadership
– Echoing groupthink without critical thought
Tribesmen can evolve into Citizens through expanded awareness and inclusivity – According to the reports 90% of Africans share the inglorious category of being either a tribesman or an “ idiot”
## Who is a Citizen?
Citizens embody responsibility, empathy, and vision They constitute only 10%
– Respect laws and systems, even when unmonitored
– Drive progress through ethical actions
– Uplift others selflessly and inclusively
– Champion community well-being beyond parochial interests
– Lead with integrity and accountability
– Foster unity in diversity
Citizens transform societies, fostering harmony and growth
## The African Paradox
Nowhere is the challenge of Tribesmanship and Idiotism more stark than in African societies . Here at my local government , people of the same historical background, culture, , tradition, religion , same language, living side by side, separated by artificial boundaries —often wage war against one another using mortal weapons over narrow interests. Neighbors become adversaries, and communities fracture along factional lines. This regression stifles progress and empowers mediocrity
