Speculation Grows Over Top northern PDP Governor Possible Defection to APC
In Taraba State, political tension is escalating due to growing speculation that Governor Agbu Kefas may defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Despite the absence of an official statement, Governor Kefas’s growing closeness with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ignited widespread speculation about a possible political realignment.
Observers point out the governor’s frequent interactions with the president, both at public events and in private meetings, as a possible indication of changing loyalties.
Sources familiar with the situation indicate that the initiative might be motivated by a wish to draw increased federal attention to Taraba.
The state, still governed by the opposition, has reportedly faced challenges in obtaining significant federal investments, especially for infrastructure.
The signs are becoming evident. As the 2027 elections approach, changes in political loyalty are not uncommon.
“If Kefas is truly contemplating a switch, it might be more about facilitating federal collaboration for Taraba rather than engaging in partisan politics,” commented a senior political analyst in Jalingo.
Adding to the speculation, a local advocacy organization, known as the Concerned Taraba Youth Group, has openly urged Governor Kefas to join forces with the APC.
The group pointed to the prolonged neglect of federal projects, such as the Mambilla Hydro Power Project and the unfinished Zing-Jalingo-Wukari road, as reasons for urging the governor to reevaluate his political base.
Shedrack Iremiya Gani, the group’s spokesperson, expressed a plea for Governor Agbu Kefas to work closely with President Bola Tinubu to attract more federal projects and support in Taraba. He urged the governor to make history by switching from the PDP to join the APC.
