Sowore Calls For Abolition Of UN, Slams Global Body As ‘Ineffective’ After U.S. Military Action In Venezuela

According to Sowore, the United Nations has failed in its core mandate to maintain international peace and security.
Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has called for the abolition of the United Nations, describing the global body as ineffective and unfit for purpose amid ongoing international conflicts and humanitarian crises.
In a statement issued on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, January 4, 2026, Sowore wrote, “I repeat, it is time to abolish the UN of jokers.”
He added that “serious nations of the world should withdraw legitimacy from this hollow institution and boycott the next United Nations General Assembly UNGA.”
According to Sowore, the United Nations has failed in its core mandate to maintain international peace and security.
“An organization that cannot stop impunity, aggression, or mass suffering has outlived its purpose,” he said.
Sowore’s comments come amid heightened global tensions and renewed criticism of multilateral institutions following recent military interventions, protracted wars, and worsening humanitarian emergencies in several regions, including Latin America, the Middle East, and parts of Africa.
Critics have increasingly accused the UN Security Council of paralysis, particularly due to the veto power held by its five permanent members, which often stalls collective action.
The United Nations, founded in 1945 in the aftermath of World War II, was established to prevent future global conflicts, promote human rights, and foster international cooperation.
However, the body has long faced criticism for its perceived inability to enforce resolutions, hold powerful states accountable, or prevent large-scale human rights violations.
Sowore, a longtime critic of global and domestic power structures, has frequently used social media to challenge what he describes as elite-driven institutions that, in his view, fail to serve ordinary people.
His latest remarks align with a broader wave of skepticism toward international governance bodies, particularly in the Global South, where questions about fairness, representation, and effectiveness have intensified.
Sowore had on Saturday, January 3, strongly criticised the UN over the crisis in Venezuela and the United States’ military actions in the country, including the capture of the president of the country.
Sowore described the global body as ineffective and called for its dissolution.
He accused U.S. President Donald Trump of pursuing an illegal regime change agenda in Venezuela, following the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
“In light of the illegal regime change agenda pursued by the U.S. President Donald Trump, in Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, the time has come to confront an uncomfortable truth, this that the UN has devolved into a ceremonial tea party, impotent, compromised, and largely irrelevant,” Sowore said.
He further faulted the UN for its repeated failure to check unilateral aggression and abuses of power by influential nations.
“Its persistent failure to restrain unilateral aggression, war crimes, and abuses of power exposes a deep and incurable structural rot,” he stated.
Sowore argued that the organisation has lost its legitimacy, insisting it can no longer protect humanity from the actions of powerful leaders.
“An institution that cannot protect humanity from the ego, bloodlust, and unchecked ambition of a single man obsessed with dominance has forfeited any claim to legitimacy,” he said.
He called for the dismantling of the United Nations and the creation of a new global body.
“The UN should be dissolved and replaced with a truly credible coalition of nation-states, one designed to serve humanity, uphold justice, and prevent tyranny, not legitimize it,” Sowore added.
