The leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has said he remains unfazed by any potential disapproval or visa restrictions from the United States, insisting that African nations offer him all the welcome he needs.
Speaking in a recent address, Malema said, “When we do that, we must know we are doing that against America, they will never like that but are we going to retreat because America does not want us to do it, never.”
He emphasised that even if barred from the U.S., he would remain unconcerned, stating, “Even if America decides that I should no longer come to America, it’s okay, I will enter Zimbabwe, I will enter Botswana, I will enter Nigeria, I will enter Africa.”
Malema also questioned why he should be bothered about Western approval when African countries continue to welcome him warmly.
He said, “Why should I be concerned about the people who are going to feed me like beggars and make me faint when I can go to Nigeria and eat Jollof.”
Recalling a previous visit to Nigeria, he added, “When I went to Nigeria, we were given nice Jollof Rice and Pepper Soup by the governor of Enugu State, we were sweating but we were not stopping. That is now nice Africa is, you want to give me a visa to America, you don’t want to give me a visa, I don’t care.”
Malema’s remarks come as part of his broader criticism of Western influence and his continued call for African self-assertion.
His comments come amid increasing speculation of a possible visa ban on him.
This is even as it is speculated that the U.S. and U.K. authorities may impose travel restrictions on him due to his stance on land reform, anti-imperialist rhetoric.
Malema is also vocal in his calls for radical economic transformation in South Africa and Africa at large.
