Six killed, 23 injured as truck crashes on Lagos-Ibadan expressway
A lone truck crash that occurred around Foursquare Camp along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday reportedly claimed six lives, killed 29 cows and left 23 people injured.
The crash, which involved a DAF CF 380 truck painted white and blue with registration number SNA 287 XA, was reportedly caused by fatigue and excessive speed.
The trailer, believed to have come from the northern part of the country and heading to Lagos State, was said to be carrying passengers and about 35 cows.
The injured persons and corpses were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital, GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, and Victory Hospital, Ogere.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, disclosed this in a statement sent to journalists on Monday.
Odunsi-Oyewole said, “The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun Sector Command reports a fatal road traffic crash (RTC) on the Ibadan–Lagos Expressway near the Foursquare Camp area earlier today.
“The incident occurred at about 11:27 hours, with a response time of two minutes before the rescue team from the FRSC Ogunmakin Unit Command arrived at the scene. A trailer (DAF CF 380, white and blue) with registration number SNA 287 XA was involved in the lone crash.
“A total of 29 persons were involved. Twenty-three persons were injured, while six persons were killed.
“This was a case of mixed loading of cattle and passengers. FRSC discourages this practice because there is no segregation between goods and humans. In the event of a crash, it is difficult to separate humans from goods, which may eventually lead to loss of lives.”
The command said investigations were ongoing to determine the precise mechanical and contributing factors that led to the crash.
Meanwhile, the command urged motorists to regularly service and inspect commercial vehicles, especially heavy-duty trailers, maintain safe speeds and ensure proper vehicle control, particularly on expressways.
Motorists were also advised to observe road safety regulations, including adequate rest and avoidance of fatigue.
