According to New York Times report, sources briefed by American officials on the private discussions reveal that the Crown Prince is framing the conflict as a “historic opportunity” to fundamentally “remake the Middle East” by force.
Amidst escalating international concern over what many observers describe as unprovoked U.S. and Israeli aggression against Tehran, Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), has reportedly been lobbying President Donald Trump to expand the current military campaign.
According to New York Times report, sources briefed by American officials on the private discussions reveal that the Crown Prince is framing the conflict as a “historic opportunity” to fundamentally “remake the Middle East” by force.
In a series of high-level conversations held over the past week, Prince Mohammed reportedly urged President Trump to move beyond targeted strikes and press toward the total destruction of the Iranian government.
Citing people familiar with the discussions, the Crown Prince argued that the long-term security of the Gulf can only be guaranteed by the complete elimination of the current administration in Tehran.
This hardline stance comes even as global humanitarian organisations warn that an escalation could trigger a catastrophic regional war.
While both Saudi Arabia and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu view Iran as a primary adversary, analysts point to a sharp divergence in their desired endgames.
While Israeli officials may view a “failed Iranian state”, consumed by internal turmoil and incapable of posing a military threat, as a strategic victory, Riyadh reportedly views the prospect of a collapsed state on its doorstep as a “grave and direct security threat” that could lead to regional anarchy.
Despite the Crown Prince’s alleged aggressive rhetoric, senior officials within both the Saudi and American governments reportedly harbour deep anxieties.
There is growing concern that if the unprovoked conflict drags on, Iran could launch retaliatory strikes against Saudi oil installations, potentially crippling global energy markets.
Furthermore, military advisors have warned that the United States risks becoming “stuck in an endless war” with no clear exit strategy.
