Reps Demand Full Breakdown of FG’s Financial Interventions to States and LGs Since 2023
The House of Representatives has directed the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to provide a detailed breakdown of all federal government financial interventions given to states and local governments outside the regular FAAC allocations from 2023 to date.
The lawmakers mandated that the details—covering the nature of each intervention, total amount released, disbursement dates, beneficiaries, and attached conditions (if any)—must be submitted within two weeks.
Following this, the House tasked its Joint Committee on Finance, Inter-Governmental Affairs, and Public Accounts to review the submissions, engage relevant stakeholders, and report back within four weeks to ensure transparency, accountability, and value for money.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki, who noted that while the federal government regularly provides budget support, infrastructure funds, ecological grants, and emergency relief packages to states and LGs, there has been no publicly consolidated record of these disbursements.
Dasuki warned that the lack of transparency could hinder effective oversight and make it difficult for the legislature to track utilisation or measure the impact of such funds on national development.
“Without detailed information on the nature, amounts, beneficiaries, and purposes of these interventions, it becomes difficult for the legislature to evaluate their effectiveness and ensure they align with national development goals,” he said.
The House emphasized that clarity on federal interventions would help strengthen fiscal discipline across all tiers of government and promote public accountability.
