Reps Amend Electoral Act, Boost INEC Powers, Defer Contentious Clause

The House of Representatives on Wednesday amended key sections of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill to enhance INEC’s authority, tighten electoral processes and curb malpractice, while deferring a controversial clause for further consideration.

Lawmakers approved changes covering voter registration, party primaries, candidate nominations, use of technology, result collation and stiffer penalties for electoral offences, but stepped down Section 51 as it was not included in the committee report.
