Oyo Traditional Rulers Endorse Ladoja For Council Chairman Position
According to Ireporter Online, the Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, has assured Governor Seyi Makinde that members of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs will fully support the council’s newly inaugurated chairman, Oba Rashidi Ladoja. iOS Apps
Alao made the statement in Ibadan on Sunday following the governor’s visit to his palace in Orile-Igbon, Surulere Local Government Area, on Friday. He expressed gratitude to the governor for the visit and confirmed that council members across the state’s five zones—Ibadan, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Oke-Ogun, and Ibarapa—were united behind the new leadership.
Governor Makinde had on Thursday inaugurated the council after a 15-year hiatus, with Oba Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadan, appointed as its first chairman. However, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, was absent from the inauguration at the House of Chiefs in Ibadan.
Makinde had previously stated that the council chairmanship would rotate among the Olubadan, the Alaafin, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, following a purported agreement among the three first-class monarchs. The Alaafin’s media aide, Bode Durojaye, later contradicted this, insisting that no such meeting had taken place.
Addressing the governor during the palace visit, the Olugbon reaffirmed the unity of the traditional institution and urged cooperation with contemporary governance structures. He emphasized that traditional rulers should embrace modern realities, highlighting that global power had shifted from historical empires to current governance systems.
“The council has now been re-inaugurated, and we have a new chairman in the person of His Excellency, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadan. I want to assure Your Excellency that we are all one in the council. We are united across the five zones,” Alao stated.
He added that understanding and cooperation with government policies are essential for good governance, security, and peaceful coexistence. The Olugbon was accompanied by other traditional rulers, including the Aresapa of Iresa-Pupa, Aranyin of Iranyin, Olujado of Ijado, and Iba Abogunde Tajudeen Aminullahi.
