One Security Operative Killed As Boko Haram Insurgents Ambush JTF Patrol In Borno

One CJTF operative, identified as Hamman Ibrahim, 40, sustained grave injuries and died during the attack.

Amember of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) has been killed in a suspected ambush by the Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, security sources said.

The attack occurred around 2:30pm on January 5 along the Warave–Bayan Dutse Road, an area that has remained volatile despite ongoing counterinsurgency operations.

According to Zagazola Makama, a security analyst who cited local sources in a post on X, the assailants opened fire on CJTF members and local hunters who were on routine patrol.

One CJTF operative, identified as Hamman Ibrahim, 40, sustained grave injuries and died during the attack.

Following the ambush, personnel from a nearby military Forward Operating Base alerted higher command, prompting troops of Operation HADIN KAI, alongside police officers and CJTF members, to move to the scene.

The victim was evacuated to the General Hospital in Gwoza, where medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival, the sources said.

Authorities documented the incident, after which Mr. Ibrahim’s body was released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The attack underscores persistent security challenges in parts of southern Borno, where CJTF members and local vigilantes continue to support military operations against insurgent groups operating in the region.
