One Person Killed As Police Open Fire During Results Announcement IN Niger council election

One person has been confirmed dead after police officers allegedly opened fire in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, following the declaration of the local government election results.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday evening shortly after the incumbent chairman, Jibril Abdullahi Muregi, was declared the winner of the November 1 local government election.

The development has heightened tension in the area, with residents accusing the authorities of imposing Muregi on the people ahead of the poll.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Muregi’s candidacy sparked widespread discontent in Mokwa after allegations that he was handpicked by the state governor Umar Bago in the state despite opposition from stakeholders.
According to an earlier report, Governor Umar Bago had declared Muregi as a consensus candidate, a move that angered other aspirants and prompted them to challenge his selection in court.
The legal tussle, however, did not stop his name from being cleared to contest the election under the ruling party.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said the area remained tense hours after the incident, with heavy security presence around the council secretariat.
Reports from other parts of the state indicated that the violence was not limited to Mokwa.
At least two people were reportedly killed in Kontagora and Agaie on Saturday following clashes that erupted after the conclusion of the same local government elections.
