Nigerian Railway Corporation Recovers Locomotive, Coach From Kaduna-Bound Train Accident Site

According to the Corporation, the recovery team successfully lifted one of the derailed coaches in addition to the locomotive that was earlier retrieved.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced progress in its recovery efforts at the site of Tuesday’s train accident, confirming the retrieval of a locomotive and one passenger coach.

“The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, on Wednesday, 27th August 2025, returned to the site of the train accident of Tuesday, 26th August 2025, to personally oversee ongoing recovery operations alongside NRC recovery engineers,” a statement signed by Opeifa read in part.

According to the Corporation, the recovery team successfully lifted one of the derailed coaches in addition to the locomotive that was earlier retrieved.

“Dr. Opeifa commended the engineers for their professionalism, resilience, and swift response in handling the situation,” the statement said.

The NRC boss also acknowledged the role of security operatives at the scene, noting that they ensured “the recovery process was carried out smoothly, safely, and without disruption.”

He further extended gratitude to journalists covering the incident, “extending gratitude for their continuous support during this challenging period”.

“Dr. Opeifa emphasized that the dissemination of credible and factual information is crucial to help Nigerians better understand the true situation and the progress being made,” the statement said.

Reassuring commuters, the NRC stated that the restoration of train services was a top priority.

“The NRC wishes to reassure its esteemed passengers and the general public that every necessary measure is being taken to restore train operations in the shortest possible time. Passenger safety and service reliability remain the Corporation’s top priorities,” the statement said.

On Tuesday, the NRC confirmed a train derailment involving a Kaduna-bound train, following a report by SaharaReporters.

“NRC confirms a train derailment involving its Kaduna bound AKTS train service at about 11.09 at KM 49 between Kubwa station and Asham station,” it said.

“Emergency rescue, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals have already been mobilised.”

A passenger described the scene as chaotic, with people scrambling in panic to safety.
