“Nigeria will breaķ if US tries to abołish Sharia law” – MURIC fires strong warning to America

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has sent a very strong message to the United States: any attempt to force Nigeria to cancel Sharia law in the North will scatter the country.

The warning came after a Nigerian scholar based in America, Dr Ebenezer Obadare, told the US Congress last week that Nigeria should scrap Sharia courts and disband the Hisbah police if it truly wants to protect religious freedom and fight terrorism.

Professor Ishaq Akintola, the head of MURIC, replied on Friday with a hot statement that has gone viral.

“Sharia is not just a law for us – it is our way of life. It is part of Islam. Once you touch Sharia, you are touching Islam itself. That is the red line. Nobody should cross it,” he said.

He warned that if America or any foreign power pushes President Tinubu to abolish Sharia in the twelve northern states that use it, the result will be serious trouble.

“Muslims fought hard to bring back full Sharia after democracy returned in 1999. It was done through state assemblies, through the constitution, through the will of the people. Trying to remove it now will tear Nigeria into pieces,” Professor Akintola added.

He reminded everyone that northern Muslims have been helping the army and government to fight Boko Haram and bandits for many years. “We will keep helping as long as nobody touches our Sharia. The day anybody tries, everything will change.”

Many Muslims on social media are backing MURIC. They are calling the American suggestion “arrogance” and “new colonialism.”

On the other side, some human rights groups and Christian leaders have long complained that Sharia courts treat non-Muslims and women unfairly, and that punishments like flogging or cutting off hands go against Nigeria’s constitution and international agreements.

But MURIC says those complaints are just an excuse to attack Islam.

For now, the federal government has not said anything about the matter, but the warning from MURIC is clear: Sharia is not negotiable, and any outside pressure to end it will only make Nigeria’s problems worse, not better.
