Nigeria Is Not Libya or Syria -Yoruba Union Cautions Trump Against Foreign Interference
The Yoruba Union (Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá) has strongly condemned recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, describing his warning to Nigeria as “reckless, insensitive, and dangerous.”
Trump’s controversial statement came after the U.S. designated Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern’, a move that sparked outrage among civic groups and leaders across the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Convener Olusola Badero and Home Director Princess Balogun, the Yoruba Union said Trump’s words could worsen Nigeria’s internal divisions rather than foster peace.
According to the group, Nigeria already faces enough crises, from insecurity to hunger and economic hardship, and does not need any “external provocation or threat of war.”
“Instead of issuing threats, Trump should be helping to promote peace and stability across Africa,” the statement read. “Where was he when herders and terrorists were slaughtering innocent Nigerians while the government looked away?”
The Union accused successive Nigerian governments of neglecting citizens’ safety and prioritizing politics over lives, noting that insecurity has devastated communities from Plateau to Benue, Zamfara to Borno, Ogun to Ondo, and beyond.
It argued that Trump’s remarks were hypocritical, questioning why the U.S. ignored years of bloodshed only to suddenly act concerned.
“We have seen what happened to Libya, Somalia, and Syria, nations reduced to rubble in the name of foreign intervention,” the Union warned. “Nigeria must not follow that path.”
The group urged Washington to support Nigeria through intelligence sharing, technology, and economic empowerment, rather than threats or sanctions.
It also called on the Nigerian government to stop negotiating with terrorists and to prosecute those behind mass killings instead of rewarding them.
“Justice must be done. Those who turned our farmlands into graveyards should not walk free,” the statement added.
The Yoruba Union reaffirmed its stance that Nigeria’s unity and survival depend on justice, accountability, and good governance, not fear or foreign interference.
