My dad didn’t support my comedy until money came in — Sabinus
Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has opened up about the early resistance he faced from his father when he began his comedy career.
Speaking in a candid interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus said his father had always wanted him to study Law, a dream that never materialised despite several attempts to secure admission.
According to him, he later settled for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.
He explained that it was during his time on campus that he discovered his gift for comedy and began making skits.
Sabinus disclosed that his father was unaware of his new passion until after his graduation.
“After I graduated, my dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it. It was one more year after school that he started seeing me on comedy show posters,” Sabinus said, adding that his sisters confirmed the development to their father.
This revelation, he noted, angered his dad.
“He was very furious. He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer,’” he recalled.
Sabinus added that his father only began to accept his career choice after he started earning enough to support him financially, eventually giving his blessings as the comedy career flourished.
