The passing of Professor Oladipo O. Akinkugbe on Monday, 15th of June, 2020, exactly 32 days before his 87th birthday, is a loss of monumental dimension not only to Nigeria and the world of academia, but to countless protƩgƩs who have been mentored under his multidisciplinary talent.
A renowned professor of hypertension and nephrology, Prof. Akinkugbe was an outstanding academic and a university administrator whose foundational imprints on many a university in Nigeria, have passed into relished legacies.
Even though Providence let Prof. Akinkugbe to play a prominent role at a critical juncture in my life, I see myself as one of his many admirers who got attracted to him through his expansive knowledge base, intellectual wit and an avuncular desire to lend a helping hand to the younger generation.
He will be sorely missed by his wife, Prof. Sade Akinkugbe, his children, the prominent Akinkugbe family of Ondo, the Ekimoguns – home and abroad, the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Nigerian National Merit Award of which he was a Laureate and many other international Medical Associations and Societies.
