Major opposition party Signals Support for Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Bid

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has said it may adopt Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election if the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) gives him the ticket to run for a second term.

APGA National Chairman, Sly Ezeokenwa, made this known during a press briefing in Lagos on Thursday.
According to him, once Tinubu secures the APC nomination through the party’s direct primaries, APGA’s national convention will likely endorse him as its presidential candidate.

“I can bet you that the national convention of APGA will adopt him as our presidential candidate,” Ezeokenwa said.

He explained that the decision is not new, noting that the party adopted Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its presidential candidate during the 2011 and 2015 elections.
Ezeokenwa added that APGA decided to return to that approach because the party believes Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” aligns with its political ideology.

According to him, the president has shown goodwill toward the party and its members.
The APGA chairman also spoke about the recently passed electoral amendment law, which states that only registered party members can vote or contest during party primaries.

He said the provision allowing direct primaries would help reduce the high cost political parties face when selecting candidates.

However, he argued that smaller political parties should not be restricted from deciding who their members are or how they conduct their internal processes.

Ezeokenwa warned that there appears to be an attempt to weaken smaller political parties and stop them from presenting strong candidates in elections.
