Lakurawa Terrorist Group Launches Deadly Attacks In Niger Republic, Intensifies Border Tensions With Nigeria

The latest assault took place in the village of Gueza, in the Dioundiou department, where five villagers were reportedly strangled to death by the militants.

Gunmen suspected to be members of the Lakurawa militant group have carried out a series of deadly attacks in the Dosso region of Niger Republic, intensifying tensions along the Niger Republic-Nigeria border.

The latest assault took place in the village of Gueza, in the Dioundiou department, where five villagers were reportedly strangled to death by the militants.

It was gathered that shortly after, the attackers returned, killing a local father and the village chief’s representative in a retaliatory strike fueled by a personal vendetta.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad area, the attacks started from a local dispute involving a woman pursued by a Lakurawa leader.

He explained that after the village chief’s representative intervened, and warned the woman’s father about the situation, the woman was sent away to live with relatives.

Makama added that, enraged by the decision, the militants retaliated, resulting in further bloodshed.
