Lagos To Become First African City To Host E1 Racing Championship In October 2025 —Sanwo-Olu
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, Sanwo-Olu shared highlights of his visit to Monaco over the weekend, where he attended the E1 Racing Championship and reflected on the event’s global significance.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the state will make history as the first African city to host the prestigious E1 Racing Championship.
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, Sanwo-Olu shared highlights of his visit to Monaco over the weekend, where he attended the E1 Racing Championship and reflected on the event’s global significance.
“This weekend, we were in Monaco experiencing the E1 Racing Championship. It was a good reminder of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly groundbreaking,” the governor wrote.
He revealed that Lagos will host the event on October 4th and 5th, 2025, a move he described as a “major milestone” for both the sport and the city.
“I’m proud to share that Lagos will become the first African city to host the E1 Championship on October 4th and 5th, 2025. That’s a major milestone for the sport and for what it says about our city. It shows that Lagos is ready to be part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and new approaches to marine transportation,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu said the event presents an opportunity for Lagos to showcase its unique identity to the world.
“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special, our culture, our energy, and our people. It’s a chance to welcome visitors, share our stories, and highlight the incredible potential of our city,” he added.
The governor also expressed appreciation to Afreximbank for its support in making the hosting possible.
“I’m grateful to Afreximbank for their support, not just as a partner but as a believer in what Lagos can achieve. Their investment in Team Drogba and their commitment to this vision mean a great deal,” he stated.
Concluding his message, Sanwo-Olu said the city was poised to deliver a landmark event: “We’re bringing a world-class sporting event to our shores, we’re opening a new chapter for Lagos and I can’t wait for the world to see what we have to offer.”
The E1 Championship is the world’s officially recognised first and only electric powerboat racing series, aimed at promoting sustainable marine mobility.
