Labour Party Accuses Abia Governor Of Anti-Party Activities, Sets Up Disciplinary Panel

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP), led by the Julius Abure faction has in its meeting held at the party’s national headquarters on May 2, 2025.
At the meeting, it decided to probe Abia State governor, Alex Otti, over what was termed as “anti-party activity.”
According to the official statement, “NEC confirmed its directive for the issuance of NOTICE of the 2024 National Convention of the Party,” which was “given to INEC on 04/12/2023.”
NEC also affirmed its approval of “subsequent Notices of change of date and venue,” with the convention eventually held in “Nnewi on 27/03/2024.”
The decisions reached was signed in statement by Barrister Julius Abure,” the National Chairman, and “Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim,” the National Secretary of the party.
The statement noted that while addressing internal discipline, the NEC “reviewed the anti-party activities” of “Dr. Alex Otti,” Governor of Abia State, along with other “erring members.” Consequently, a disciplinary committee was constituted with the following members: Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi” – Chairman, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim” – Secretary, Barr. Kehinde Edun” – Member, Mrs. Dudu Manuga” – Member, Barr. Callistus Ihejiagwa” – Member.
The committee was given two weeks to investigate the development and revert back to the Abure led factional Labour Party leadership.
This development is even as the Abure-led leadership stated that Labour Party “is not and will not be part of any coalition” for the “2027 General Election.” Instead, the party said it would “continue to rebuild, reposition, re-strategize, reconcile, strengthen,” and focus on “driving its programs and policies” toward victory.
It was noted that the the statement further “ratified the list of ADHOC delegates” elected during the congresses across the “36 states and the FCT”.
The council declared that the 2024 National Convention was conducted “in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN), 1999,” the “Electoral Act, 2022,” the “2019 LP Constitution,” and the “INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022,” alongside the “LP Guidelines for the 2024 National Convention.”Travel guides
The factional NEC emphasised its stance on the event’s legitimacy, stating that it “confirmed the validity of the 2024 National Convention” and “stands by its outcome.”
Reaffirming internal leadership, NEC declared its “support and confidence” in the newly elected “National Working Committee (NWC),” expressing belief in the “competence and capacity” of the team, led by “Barrister Julius Abure,” to lead the party “towards unity, progress and victory in the coming elections.”
NEC commended the Supreme Court’s ruling delivered on “04/04/2025,” applauding the “sound principle of the supremacy of political parties” and the recognition of “decisions taken by the validly convened recognised organs” of the party as “binding and sacrosanct.”
The NEC also reaffirmed its “commitment to reconciliation,” extending an “olive branch to all aggrieved members,” urging them to “sheath their swords in the overall interest of the Party and our dear Nation.”
This development comes amid escalating tensions in the Labour party.
There are two factions, the one which has its 2023 Presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi and that which Julius Abure lays claim to.
