Kwankwasiyya Leader in Kano’s Largest Ward Defects to APC
The political scene in Kano State has shifted significantly with Alhaji Amadu Danfulani, a notable figure of the Kwankwasiyya Movement from Gobirawa Ward in Dala Local Government Area, formally leaving the movement to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gobirawa, recognized as Nigeria’s largest ward with the most polling units, renders Danfulani’s defection a noteworthy political event that could have widespread implications throughout the state.
On Tuesday, Danfulani expressed that his decision was rooted in profound disappointment with the Kwankwasiyya Movement and its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
He mentioned that he and thousands of his followers were dissatisfied with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) governing the state due to their policies and programs, which they view as being against the people’s interests.
The ceremony marking Danfulani’s defection took place at the Kano State APC Headquarters, situated on Hotoro-Maiduguri Road.
The State Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Abbas—represented by Alh Shehu Aliyu Ungoggo, APC Zonal Chairman for Kano Central—and Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, Managing Director of the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA), welcomed and ‘baptized’ those who were switching allegiance to their group.
The Kano State Youth Leader, who also serves as the Northwest Zonal Youth Leader, Alhaji Labaran Kura, was present to welcome both the individual switching allegiance and the accompanying young supporters.
Alh Munir Haruna, the APC Chairman of Dala Local Government, was also present to welcome Danfulani after his reception by the Gobirawa Ward Chairman of the APC.
Speaking at the event, Abbas, represented by Alh. Ungoggo, expressed that the party is open to welcoming members from any opposition parties who are willing to join the APC, as long as they adhere to its procedures and regulations.
He revealed that even the Leader of Kwankwasiyya and NNPP, Kwankwaso, is welcome to rejoin the APC provided he adheres to the party’s due process and complies with its laws, constitution, and principles.
He explained that Gobirawa, as the largest ward in both the state and Nigeria with the most polling units, will provide a significant advantage to the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general election due to Danfulani and thousands of NNPP members defecting to APC.
Alhaji Amadu Danfulani expressed his happiness about joining the APC, pledging to collaborate closely with Suleiman Bichi, the Managing Director of HJRBDA, and the party leaders to work diligently towards securing victories for President Bola Tinubu and all APC candidates in the 2027 elections.
