Zakari Muhammed, spokesperson of the 7th House of Representatives and a criminology expert from Kwara State, speaks with The Punch correspondent on the worsening security situation in Nigeria, claims of political marginalisation of the North, and perceptions surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s relationship with Muslims from the region.
When he was asked if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fair to northern Muslims, he said that there were certain agreements that were considered when northern Muslims decided to support the President in the 2023 presidential election. “When an agreement is made, there is an understanding that both parties will strive to meet it, and where full compliance is challenging, compromises can be reached,” he noted.
He further expressed concern over what he described as a pattern of nepotism in the current administration, calling it regrettable in a country as diverse as Nigeria. According to him, leadership should draw on the expertise of capable individuals from across the nation and beyond, while ensuring a balance that reflects the country’s diversity.
When asked how these issues might influence the 2027 elections, he suggested that perceptions of fairness, inclusivity, and the equitable distribution of opportunities could significantly shape voter sentiment and political alignments in the coming polls.
Further talking, he said, “You can take it to the bank that the President will not get the number of votes he got in the North in 2023 when 2027 comes. Northerners believe he is no longer friendly to them.
“Allowing insurgency to continue festering is seen as a way of disenfranchising them. These are the insinuations making the rounds. I believe Mr President needs to take a deeper and more sincere look at this.”
