JUST IN: Bandits Kill Two BDC Operators in Border Market

Tragedy struck traders in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Sunday as suspected Lakurawa bandits ambushed the Durusar Gawo currency market, killing two Bureau De Change (BDC) operators and stealing large sums of cash.

According to the Sokoto State Police Command, the attackers arrived around mid‑day on motorcycles and opened fire on traders at the busy marketplace that links Nigeria with the Niger Republic. One victim died instantly, while the second succumbed to injuries at Dogon Dutse Hospital.

The victims have been identified as Alhaji Ummaru and Sani, both well‑known currency dealers who regularly served cross‑border traders. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen seized cash in both local and foreign currencies before fleeing into nearby bushes.

Residents of Kurdula District expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation, noting that banditry has intensified across Gudu and neighbouring Tangaza Local Government Areas, with raids, livestock theft and violence disrupting daily life. Locals lamented the absence of a permanent security presence in the area, with the nearest station reportedly about 45 kilometres away, leading to slow responses when attacks occur.

Many schools in affected communities have been forced to close, and traders now conduct business under constant fear of further attacks. Community leaders have called on the Sokoto State Government and federal security agencies to strengthen patrols and protection along the border corridor to safeguard lives and commerce.

Police authorities said investigations are ongoing and that deployments to vulnerable border communities have been intensified in response to the tragic incident.

The Durusar Gawo market is a major commercial hub where traders from both Nigeria and Niger converge for currency exchange and trade. Bandit groups such as the Lakurawa have long plagued rural and border communities in northwestern Nigeria, carrying out deadly raids, kidnappings and robberies that have displaced residents and undermined local economies.
