Investigative Platform HumAngle Hit By Suspected Cyber Attack After Exposé On Boko Haram’s Abubakar Shekau
In a statement on Wednesday, the newsroom said the sudden shutdown of its website was no coincidence, insisting that the timing strongly suggests deliberate sabotage aimed at silencing its work.
HumAngle, an investigative news platform, says its website was hit by a suspected targeted attack less than an hour after it published a long-awaited exposé on the late Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau.
In a statement on Wednesday, the newsroom said the sudden shutdown of its website was no coincidence, insisting that the timing strongly suggests deliberate sabotage aimed at silencing its work.
“HumAngle’s long-awaited exposé on Abubakar Shekau — who led Boko Haram’s years of violence — was published less than an hour ago. Soon after, our website suffered what we strongly believe is a deliberate attack and is currently inaccessible,” the organisation said.
The platform, which has published exclusive investigations on terrorism, military operations, human rights abuses, and the humanitarian fallout of Nigeria’s conflicts, said the attempted blackout only reinforces the threats facing independent journalism in the country.
“This incident highlights the forces that fear independent journalism,” HumAngle stated, adding that its technical team was working urgently to restore access and strengthen the site’s security.
Despite the disruption, the newsroom vowed that it would not be intimidated or cowed.
“HumAngle remains unwavering in its commitment to fearless, meticulous reporting. We will be back online shortly,” it said.
HumAngle’s exposé reportedly sheds new light on Shekau’s violent reign and internal dynamics within Boko Haram before his death.
