‘I had my first child at the age of 14 and bought my first car at 13’: Legendary singer Shina Peters spills
Afro-Juju icon Shina Peters has made a shocking revelation about the early years of his life and career. The 67-year-old musician disclosed that he became a father at the age of 14 and accomplished major milestones while still a teenager.
In a teaser for the upcoming episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, set to air by 6 p.m. on Monday, the legendary singer reflected on his humble beginnings, personal struggles, and creative journey.
“I started my career at the age of 10. I had my first child at 14. I bought my first car at 13. I built my first house at 16,” Peters revealed.
Born Oluwashina Akanbi Peters, the music star promised to be brutally honest in the interview. “This interview will be blunt and unfiltered because they have bastardised what people like us suffered for what we cried to God to change. By His grace, He did, but now they’ve changed it back. I won’t be part of that,” he stated.
The Ace crooner, who rose to prominence in the 1980s after forming Sir Shina Peters & His International Stars, also shared his struggles with creating new music in the current industry landscape.
“Sixty-five percent of my fans are Igbos, not Yorubas. My fans are demanding that I give them new music, but I don’t just go to the studio. I can’t go to the studio; the atmosphere is not conducive for me. I don’t know what to sing,” he lamented.
Before launching his band, Peters played alongside juju music greats like Ebenezer Obey and Prince Adekunle. His 1989 album Ace (Afro-Juju Series 1) achieved double platinum status and remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated musical works, blending Juju and Afrobeat into a timeless sound that shaped his enduring legacy.
Note that legendary singer Shina Peller is the father of popular Nigerian music video director, Clarence Peters.
