Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi Lamido II, the emir of Kano has declared that his role as a recognized monarch is not limited to those outlined by the constitution.
Emir Sanusi II while speaking in an interview on Channels Tv on Wednesday, 4th of February, explained that he does not require the constitution to advise the president or a governor even though such responsibility is not clearly stipulated in constitution of the country.
He described it as a moral responsibility on his crown which he owes the society to always advise political leaders necessary to avert things from going wrong.
“Do I need to be told to advise the President? Do I need the Constitution to tell me that if I think there is something the country needs, I should go to the President and say, ‘Mr President, I think this is wrong?” He stated

“I don’t need the Constitution. I don’t need the Constitution to tell the governor that I think this is what we should be doing. I get that authority from being a leader of the people”.
Emir Sanusi also spoke on the need for increased inclusion of women in political leadership positions, describing it as an important way of improving inclusive governance. He also faulted the level of child marriages in the north, attributing to low literacy level in the north due to insufficient schools.
This is the first media interview by Emir Sanusi Lamido since the political feud between governor Yusuf Abba Kabir and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso came into public limelight. There have been speculation over the future of emir Sanusi Lamido II following the political separation between Kwankwaso and governor Yusuf Abba Kabir. Even though the Kano state government has tried to allay public fear and concern over Sanusi Lamido’s future on the throne, there is still palpable feeling that governor Yusuf Abba Kabir following his realignment with former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, might decide to revert to the Ganduje’s administration’s emirate structure which came at the expense of Sanusi Lamido.
