I Bought Land For ₦3.2 Million While In Europe; My In-Law Claimed Government Had Taken Over It—Man lament

A young man identified as Henry has told Brekete Family how he bought land through his in‑law, only to later discover that the story around the property had changed. He said he paid ₦3.2 million for the land in 2022 while he was still in Europe, and his sister handled the process on ground in Nigeria. When he returned in 2024 and needed money for something urgent, he called the in‑law to say he wanted to sell the land, but was advised to wait until Christmas when prices would be better.

Henry said that when he called again during the festive period, his in‑law told him that the state government had taken over the land for development. Because he follows the news, Henry found this claim suspicious and did not recall hearing anything about such a takeover. When his mother travelled home for Christmas, she went to the supposed site of the land and found that people who had land there were still developing their plots with no sign of any government acquisition. This discovery made the family question the story they had been told.

In Henry’s words:

“My name is Henry. So me coming because of land, land I bought 2022 from my in‑law. So 2022 I bought the land at the price of 3.2 when I was still in Europe. It was my sister that went for all the necessary things and all that. So when I came back last year, that was 2024, I called him during June that I want to sell the land, that I need money for something. So he told me that I should leave it for that time because it’s during rainy season, that I should leave it during the Christmas time, that selling land during the Christmas time is better. So during the Christmas time I called him, sir I want to sell the land. Now he now told me that the government of the state took over the land, that they want to use that place to develop something. So I now said ah, but I didn’t hear this, because I do follow most of those news. So when my mom now travelled during the festive Christmas time, my mom quickly went to the location which he sold the land for us. Getting there, my mom now found out that the land, that people are still developing, people that have land there are developing their lands, using it for something. Government didn’t take over this.”
