Hundreds Dump APC, SDP for PDP in Oyo as Sassay Strengthens Grassroots Base

In a major political shift ahead of the 2027 elections, hundreds of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Irepo Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The defection, led by House of Assembly hopeful Hon. Saliu Sarafadeen Ayinde (Sassay), took place during the PDP’s general meeting and drew a massive turnout of party faithful, stakeholders, and residents.

Hon. Sassay said the move marked part of his ongoing familiarisation tour aimed at strengthening the PDP’s grassroots presence. “We are building a structure that will transform our local government and consolidate the PDP’s dominance,” he said.

The defectors included various community and youth groups from wards across the local government, such as Sooro, Ayekale, and Karaa, alongside notable figures like Alhaji Muta Baba Onilu, Nah Star, and Mrs Nusirat Ayewo.

Welcoming the new members, PDP chairman Kazeem Adekunle Olawoyin hailed the defection as proof of the party’s growing influence and praised Sassay’s leadership as the unifying force behind the development.

Olawoyin also attributed the wave of defections to the public’s increasing confidence in Governor Seyi Makinde and his deputy, Barr. Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Lawal, describing their administration as people-driven and result-oriented.

Community members described Sassay as a visionary and humanitarian leader who continues to empower youths and support the less privileged. Many expressed confidence in his ability to deliver electoral victory for the PDP in future polls.
