House of Assembly speaker, 21 lawmakers dump Thier party for another new party ahead of 2027
The Kano State House of Assembly has released the names of lawmakers who resigned their membership from the New Nigeria Peoples Party alongside the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The Assembly’s Chief Press Secretary, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, released the list of the affected lawmakers in a statement released on Saturday evening.
According to the statement, those who left the NNPP with the governor include the Speaker of the House, Jibril Ismail Falgore, the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Bello Butu Butu, and the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussain.
Also listed are the Deputy Majority Leader, Garba Shehu Fammar, the Chief Whip, Muddasir Ibrahim Zawachiki, along with other lawmakers representing various constituencies across the state.
The statement said a total of 22 members of the House were involved in the defection, cutting across constituencies such as Ajingi, Albasu, Bagwai/Shanono, Bebeji, Bunkure, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Gabasawa, Garko, Gwale, Karaye, Kura/Garun Malam, Madobi, Minjibir, Rano, Tarauni and Wudil.
“A total of 22 members of the House of Assembly resigned their membership from the NNPP in the State,” the statement said.
It added that the Kano State House of Assembly had verified and authenticated the list of lawmakers as released.
The Assembly said the announcement was made to properly inform the public and clarify the political position of the affected lawmakers following the governor’s defection.
Kano State Governor, Kabir Yusuf had on Friday formally resigned his membership from the New Nigerian People’s Party, citing deepening internal crisis and the urgent need to protect the broader interest of the citizens of the state.
Yusuf was said to have resigned along with 21 members of the State Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and the 44 local government council chairmen.
The current development is expected to further weaken the NNPP’s influence in the state as more members of the party including government officials continue to realign with the Governor’s political direction.
The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim is among the top government officials that have so far announced their resignation from the NNPP membership effective from Friday, 23rd January 2026.
