House of Assembly Orders Withholding Of Allowances For Seven lawmakers Over Attempted Speaker Impeachment
The committee explained that the sanctions were a result of the councillors’ participation in the failed impeachment attempt.
The Niger State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has directed that three months’ allowances of seven councillors of the Suleja Legislative Council be withheld following their involvement in an attempted impeachment of the council’s Speaker and Councillor representing Iku South 1, Awwal Ibrahim.

The instruction was issued in a letter dated February 26, 2026 from the Office of the Chairman, Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs at the Niger State House of Assembly complex in Minna and addressed to the Executive Chairman of Suleja Local Government Council, Isyaku Bawa Naibi.
The committee explained that the sanctions were a result of the councillors’ participation in the failed impeachment attempt.
On this, the letter stated: “I am directed to convey the resolution of the House Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs mandating you to withhold the 3 months allowances of Council members, Suleja Legislative Council for their actions in the botched 24th February, 2026 impeachment.”

It said the impeachment process did not follow proper legislative procedures and ignored prior interventions from state authorities.
“The impeachment of the House Leader lacks substance, violates legislative procedure and complete disregard to Mr. Governor’s intervention through the House Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and the State Ruling All Progressive Congress (APC),” the letter said.
The councillors affected are Hon. Kabiru Audu (Iku South 2 Ward), Hon. Hassan A. Bako (Magajiya Ward), Hon. Salisu G. Danjuma (Bagama A Ward), Hon. Moh’d A. Musa (Hashimi B Ward), Hon. Shuaibu Moh’d Akosli (Bagama B Ward), Hon. Abubakar Adamu (Wambai Ward), and Hon. Yunusa Yakubu (Kurmin Sarki Ward).
The committee added that the measure was intended to ensure adherence to legislative rules.
On this point, the letter noted, “It is hoped that this will serve as a deterrent to future occurrence and to guard against disregard to rules of procedure in legislative practice.”
It concluded with an expression of appreciation: “While thanking you for your usual cooperation, please accept the Committee’s esteem regards.”
Earlier, on February 25, 2026, the House declared the attempted impeachment null and void, citing the absence of the mace, failure to secure the constitutionally required two-thirds majority, and improper communication of the resolution.
The House advised the public to disregard anyone claiming to be the new Speaker and called on all parties to maintain dialogue to uphold peace and democratic order in Suleja Local Government.
