Govt Commences Sealing Of Shops Selling Styrofoam Packs, Plastic Straws

Lagos State government has commenced the enforcement of ban on styrofoam and single-use plastics less than 40 microns in thickness.

In a statement on Tuesday by Gaji Tajudeen, permanent secretary, office of the environmental services at the ministry of environment and water resources, said that the decision is aimed at protecting public health and the environment.

He noted that the claim that the ban would lead to job losses is unfounded and a cheap blackmail.

Mr. Tajudeen added that the threat of plastic pollution to drainage systems, marine life, and human health is alarming.

He said: “The primary responsibility of every government is the safety of lives and property.

“The administration in Lagos took the bold decision which many other subnational governments are now drawing from.
“We gave a six-month grace period, which expired on June 30.
“Many believe we would succumb to pressure and delay enforcement. It will not happen.
“Let me also emphasise that any market, store, that is found storing or engaging in sale or distribution of the single-use plastic of less than 40 microns would be sealed up while the offenders would be punished according to the environmental laws of Lagos state.
“It’s a no-brainer, no jobs would be lost during this transition. In fact, more jobs will be created when producers and distributors embrace sustainable alternatives.”
