Governor Suspends School Graduation Ceremonies  Over Insecurity, Miscreant Attacks

The directive follows recent incidents where miscreants disrupted school-related activities, raising alarm over the safety and security of students during such gatherings.

The Niger State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has ordered an immediate suspension of all sign-out and graduation ceremonies in public and private schools within Kontagora Emirate.

The directive follows recent incidents where miscreants disrupted school-related activities, raising alarm over the safety and security of students during such gatherings.

Kontagora is one of 25 local government areas in Niger State and has recently been ravaged by bandits.

“In light of recent events, where miscreants have disrupted school-related activities in Kontagora Emirate, it has become imperative to prioritise the safety and well-being of our students during significant school events such as sign-out and graduation ceremonies,” a statement signed by the Director of Schools and Educational Services on behalf of the Commissioner on Wednesday, said.

“All public and private schools within Kontagora Emirate are hereby directed to cease the planning and execution of sign-out and graduation ceremonies until further notice.”

It added, “Schools must obtain permission and approval from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education before proceeding with any such events. This measure is crucial to ensuring that these celebrations are conducted in a safe and orderly manner, free from any potential disturbances.

“Failure to comply with this directive and to secure the necessary approvals will result in sanctions against the respective school.”

In recent years, Niger State has grappled with escalating insecurity.

These assaults have devastated rural communities, especially farming populations, forcing thousands to abandon their homes and livelihoods.

The worst-hit zones include Gulbin Boka and Kwanan Dutse in Mariga LGA, where armed bandits overran two military camps, killing many soldiers and injuring many others.

In response to the deteriorating situation, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, convened an emergency summit titled the ‘First Kontagora Emirate Security Engagement and Town Hall Meeting’.
