Gender Swap Day : varsity suspends SUG over alleged misconduct during students week
In response to allegations of misconduct during the recently concluded 2025 Students’ Week celebrations, the management of Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo, has announced the immediate suspension of the Students’ Union Government (SUG).
The management denounced what it called the “unacceptable display by some students under the pretext of ‘Gender Swap Day’” a few days prior.”
The management claims that the behavior “completely goes against the TSU dress code and the university’s character development.”
On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the university issued a statement signed by Professor Sunday Paul Bako, the vice-chancellor, expressing concern over what it called “regrettable events” that spoiled the week-long celebration. The statement also noted that certain students’ behavior was not in line with the institution’s standards and values.
It was gathered that an emergency management meeting was convened on Monday, October 13, where the incidents were reviewed.
The university attributed the breakdown of order to poor coordination and supervision by the current SUG leadership.
As part of the resolutions reached, the SUG was suspended indefinitely to allow for a comprehensive review and restructuring of student representation.
The university added that a new framework would soon be introduced to promote inclusiveness, accountability, and discipline.
“Individuals found to have acted in ways that misrepresented the university’s core values will face disciplinary action in accordance with existing regulations,” the university said.
“Students whose actions carry criminal implications have already been apprehended and will be handed over to law enforcement for further investigation and possible prosecution.”
The university reaffirmed its commitment to academic and moral excellence, emphasizing its resolve to nurture students in both character and learning.
Meanwhile, following public uproar, the SUG, under the leadership of Victor Mishak Abednego, tendered an unreserved apology to the University Management and regretted any embarrassment the event might have caused the University and the society at large.
The SUG further promised to strengthen its event planning process going forward to ensure compliance with University regulations.
