From Mushin to Europe : Badekale Wins Prestigious Erasmus Scholarship
Samuel Badekale, the 2024 best graduating student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has once again made headlines by emerging as the only Nigerian and West African selected for the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Biomembranes (MemBioMed). The fully funded program will see him study across three world-class universities in France, Italy, and Germany over the next two years.
Sharing the news on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Badekale expressed gratitude and reflected on his humble beginnings in Mushin. “2025 has been amazing in every way! Pleased to announce the next step in my journey: selected as the only Nigerian & West African for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Biomembranes — studying across three world-class universities in France, Italy & Germany,” he wrote.
According to him, his academic journey will take him through Université Côte d’Azur in France, Università di Genova in Italy, and Universität Osnabrück in Germany, where he will explore cutting-edge fields such as Membrane Biology, Neuroscience, and Experimental Medicine.
Looking back on his journey, Badekale said: “I see a young boy from Mushin, with a big dream: to explore the world and make a positive impact on the world. And today, by God’s faithfulness, that dream is gradually becoming a reality. Truly, with God, every dream is achievable, even those that seem impossible.”
He further encouraged young students to embrace education and strive for excellence. “To my younger self and every student out there: Trust God. Hold your education tightly. Come out with the best grades possible. Strive for excellence. Because education is still one of the most powerful keys to move from your local community to the global stage. Education isn’t a scam. It’s a weapon. Use it.”
Badekale has also been awarded a monthly Erasmus scholarship to support his studies, with his enrollment set to be confirmed upon completion of his bachelor’s degree before September 1, 2025.
