Former Adamawa senator, Ishaku Abbo reveals how ADC betrayed Nafiu Bala
Ishaku Abbo, a former senator who represented Adamawa north, has given some insight into the cause of the leadership crisis in the coalition party–African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement he released on his Facebook page, senator Ishaku Abbo alleges that the ADC leadership reneged on the power sharing agreement it had with Nafiu Bala and others. According to him, Nafiu Bala who is currently laying claims on the chairmanship of the ADC, was promised the northeast chairmanship position of the party following his resignation as deputy national chairman of the party to necessitate the emergence of David Mark led national leadership.
Abbo explained that the agreement between the legacy ADC leaders and the new leaders is that the legacy leaders will be given key positions in the party; however, this agreement was partially complied with.
He highlighted that the agreement entailed that Nafiu Bala from the northeast, would be the regional chairman of the party; however, former secretary to the government of the federation, Babachir Lawal argued that Nafiu Bala was unqualified to be the northeast regional chairman of the ADC–hence, the promise was unfulfilled.
After the agreement was signed and sealed, the leadership reneged and installed Babachir David Lawal in the position earlier agreed upon,” Abbo stated.
According to Abbo, Nafiu Bala was offered an alternative post– Zonal Financial Secretary which he rejected outright–a development he said degenerated into an unwanted legal tussle in the party.
He further claimed that the aggrieved actors subsequently began legal and political moves that escalated into the current leadership dispute.
Senator Abbo claims that Nafiu Bala’s latent displeasure at the ADC new leadership was exploited by powerful external influence who aims to use it to destabilize the main opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Senator Abbo appealed to INEC to reverse its stance on de-recognizing the ADC, citing that such an act if not reversed, could deepen distrust in the Nigeria’s electoral system.
He also enjoined Nafiu Bala to withdraw his suit against the ADC leadership in patriotism to Nigeria and yield to reconciliation and settlement within the ADC
