Fleeing gunmen shoot Police officer dead in Edo
Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers have reportedly killed a Police officer along the Ugbowo-Lagos road, near Ekosodin junction in Benin-City, Edo State.
DAILY POST gathered that the incident occurred Friday afternoon when there was an exchange of gunfire between fleeing suspected armed robbers and police operatives stationed in the area
A source who witnessed the incident reported that the gunmen who were driving a black Lexus RX Jeep from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) main gate axis, attempted to evade routine stop-and-search operations mounted by security personnel.
He said the suspected gunmen after passing the first checkpoint, reportedly diverted into a side street upon sighting a second police post.
According to him, a Lexus Jeep was ahead of me from the UNIBEN main gate toward Ekosodin. As soon as they noticed another checkpoint, they quickly turned onto a nearby street.
“The slain officer approached the diverted vehicle when the suspects suddenly stopped, stepped out, and allegedly opened fire on him at close range.
“The attackers were said to have taken the officer’s service rifle before attempting to flee.
“As the suspects sped off, they engaged other police officers on duty in a brief shootout before escaping from the scene”, he alleged.
As of press time, the authorities of the Edo State Police Command had yet to speak on the incident. But a source close to the Command, however, confirmed the incident.
